The Trust for Sustainable Education and Action in Architecture (SEARCH) will set up a School of Architecture, Planning and Design (SAPD) in the city. The institute will focus on teaching architecture planning and design to interested students.

Professor Rajat Rai, an eminent architect said architecture, planning and designing were inter disciplinary and the new institute would focus on the need to blend these three disciplines so that architects got better placements.

SAPD, will be a residential institute and will be affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT). The state government will determine the course fees and all courses will be accredited ones.

Mr Subhadip Biswas, a patron of the Trust said a place for the institute was yet to be finalised. "We are looking at the possibility of some land in Rajarhat. However, a symposium is also being held to discus the possibilities of the place where the institute can be set up." All courses on architecture, planning and design will be will be of five years. While architecture courses will have 40 students, planning and designing will have 30 students.

Students need to clear their plus two examinations for admission into the undergraduate course. Students applying for postgraduate courses can do so after having completed their graduation. Vocational training and diploma degrees will also be given to students.

Stressing on the need to set up an architecture school in the state, eminent Delhi-based planner, Professor AG Krishna Menon, said while other states had set up several architecture colleges, West Bengal was lagging far behind in this field. He added that while states such as Maharastra had over 30 architecture colleges, there had not been any architecture college in the state since 1965.
It may be mentioned here that many city architects have time and again pointed out the need for more architects to keep up with the changing demands of the urbanisation and the city's skyline.
