Indefinite Taxi Strike In Kolkata From Feb 2 DeferredBy ugesh sarkar, Section Transportation
The indefinite taxi strike in West Bengal from February 2 has been deferred by 15 days following an assurance by Transport minister Ranjit Kundu today that the government would take up the issue of quick delivery of Ambassador cars.
"Makers of Ambassador cars, Hindustan Motors, has failed to deliver new taxis as per demand though we have submitted applications seeking replacement against phased-out taxis," General Secretary of the Bengal Taxi Association Bimal Guha said here today. "It has delivered 1700 new taxis and another 1600 will be delivered within March 31," Kundu said. While about 6,000 taxis were phased out, another 2700 new taxis were required to complete the replacement, he said. Guha and office-bearers of some other taxi operators' body met Kundi to urge him for quick replacement of phased out taxis if possible with the Maruti Omni.
