The state panchayat and rural development department is mulling a project to provide Online assistance to students of state-affiliated schools in the districts to enable them to perform better in English.

Society for Natural Language Technology Research (SNLTR) has developed a software based on the English syllabus formulated by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. The state panchayat and rural development department has urged officials of SNLTR to make the software web-compatible. This would ensure its accessibility from all the Tathya Mitra Kendras, and in the process benefit students of the district schools.

Once the software becomes web-enabled, students of the district schools would be able to easily access the site from any Tathya Mitra Kendra.
Most of these centres are being set up in gram panchayats and block development offices, which would be convenient for the locals.

A senior official of the state panchayat and rural development department said employees at these centres would provide all necessary guidelines to the students on how to access the web page.

He further said that the software has been made in such a way that it would almost be like a student-teacher interaction session.

Their performance in their English papers is expected to improve if they prepare their lessons through software after being taught by their teachers in school. This would also save them the trouble of attending private tuition classes.
Currently, there are 4,859 Tathya Mitra Kendras in 18 districts and the state is aiming to set up another 1,938 such centres.

The facility will also be made available in 680 centres in the municipal areas of the state.
But the facility will not be available in the city. Initially, students of class V, VI and XI will be benefited and later the software will be updated to facilitate students of all classes.

When contacted, Prof Anupam Basu of the Computer Science and Engineering department of IIT, Kharagpur and honorary director, SNLTR, said besides learning their lessons it would also help students become computer savvy.
