No End To Water Woes, It's Only Getting Worse

A large part of south Kolkata went without water after a pump of the Garden Reach Waterworks developed a technical snag on Thursday morning.

According to civic authorities, however, despite the technical snag, water supply to Behala and Jadavpur was not stopped, though the water pressure was low.

Residents of Behala, however, said there was not a single drop of water.

"We did not get any water. We depended on deep tube-wells. For drinking purposes we bought bottles of mineral water," said Anirban Sarkar, a resident of A K Paul Road in Behala.

There are four pumps in the Garden Reach Waterworks, with a capacity to supply 120 million gallons of water. Because one of the pumps was defunct, the plant was not able to generate enough water to cater to different areas of south Kolkata.

Behala, Jadavpur and Garden Reach have been reeling under acute water crisis for the last four-five months.
