Salt Lake-New Town Bridge Inaugurated

A four-lane bridge connecting Sector V of Salt Lake with Rajarhat New Town was inaugurated today.
The project had been taken up for faster movement of airport-bound traffic from Sector V, the state's main electronic hub.

It may be recalled that heads of several IT companies had met chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and IT minister Mr Debesh Das and requested them to ensure a hassle-free drive between Sector V and airport. The estimated cost of the 30 metre bridge is Rs 1.50 crore. The state government and the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) have borne the expenditure. A senior KMDA official said the bridge is likely to reduce the pressure of vehicular traffic on JK Saha Bridge in Salt Lake.

He said Sector V, which houses most of the big IT companies in the state, needed a faster road link to the airport. Traffic congestion in morning and evening peak hours has become a regular feature in Sector V and those rushing to the airport to catch flights are greatly inconvenienced. KMDA engineers had designed the bridge.

State urban development minister Mr Asok Bhatacharya said that KMDA is giving maximum stress to improve road infrastructure in the Kolkata metropolitan area. Construction of flyovers and road over bridges will be done in various parts of the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. In Ultadanga, a new flyover is coming up and this will make airport-bound traffic faster. Work is on to convert Eastern Metropolitan Bypass into a six and eight lane thoroughfare.
