Industrialist Warns Govt Against Acquiring His Residential PropertyBy ugesh sarkar, Section News
The managing director of AI Champdany Industries, D J Wadhwa, has told the state government to restrain itself from acquiring the disputed residential property of Wadhwa family at AJC Bose Road in Kolkata since a case is pending in the Supreme Court.
He also hinted that in case the government goes ahead and acquires the property, the AI Champdany Industries would take a fresh view on running its units in Bengal, which directly or indirectly employs 51,000 people. Wadhwa claimed that he had approached Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and Left Front chairman Biman Bose, and urged them not to acquire the residential property for a private school which has been functioning there for over decades. Forty years ago, the Wadhwas had purchased the 25,000 sq ft plot that had a two-storied building at AJC Bose Road. A private school was functioning in the building on the basis of a lease agreement with its earlier owner. Legal dispute began in 1971 when the Wadhwa family asked the school to vacate the plot. In 2005, the Calcutta High Court also directed the school authorities to leave the building. A year later, the Land and Land Revenue Department served an acquisition notice to the Wadhwa family for the private school. The Wadhwas then challenged the department's acquisition notice at the Supreme Court. On May 25, officials from the department performed a symbolic acquisition of the property, sparking fresh controversy.
