The West Bengal government will set up a silk park, the first of its kind in the country, in Malda district to cash in on the growing silk industry in the state.
"The state government has decided to set up a silk park at Madhurhat village in Kaliachowk block in Malda district very soon," Textile Minister Manab Mukherjee told a press conference today.
He said the project will cost nearly Rs 40 crore and 15 acre will be needed for it.
"The government has 14.5 acre in its possession so land will not be a problem in setting up the project," Mukherjee said.
Silk industry in the state is growing very fast and there has been a rapid increase in production of silk cocoons in the last few years.
"Silk is not a cottage or small scale industry right now.
