After A Delay Of Over Nine Months,Kolkata Airport Modernisatio To Begin During PujaBy Nishant, Section Development
After a delay of over nine months, the Kolkata airport modernisation work is all set to begin sometime in October.
"The specific dates have not been fixed as yet. But it is expected to start soon," said Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, who was on a personal visit to Kolkata. On Tuesday, the minister said that the Bhoomi puja will be conducted sometime during the Durga Puja. The Thai-Indian consortium ITD- ITD Cementation India Limited (ITD Cem) was awarded the tender for the modernisation of the airport, as it quoted the lowest price among the four bidders. The project involves the construction of a new integrated terminal building to handle 20 million passengers. It is due to be commissioned by 2011.

The cost of the first phase of the three-phased modernisation project has been revised due to the delay from Rs 1,942 crore to Rs 2,500 crore.
After the financial bid, which was opened in June, the ITD-ITD CEM's proposal was vetted by a technical committee of the Airport Authority of India (AAI). The AAI will also appoint a project management consultant to oversee the implementation of the modernisation project on a turnkey basis. Leading firms like US-based Louis Berger Group have applied for the said position. The parent company, ITD of Thailand, has been involved in the construction of Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok. ITD Cem is a subsidiary company of ITD. The company is involved in marine works, construction of highways and bridges. Source: Express News Service 04/09/2008
