As you get mesmerised by the beautiful illumination during your visit to the pandals in Manicktala Chaltabagan and Salt Lake BD Block, don't miss out on the message these pandals want to convey through the glittering lights.

The two famous pandals of Kolkata have decided to go solar this year, and are bent on spreading the message on keeping the environment clean and green. While the Chaltabagan pandal will have its insides decked up with solar lights, the BD Block pandal will keep its exteriors illuminated with solar panels.

"Puja is a time when one has the opportunity to spread a socially-relevant message. We came up with the idea of making people aware of the solar energy appliances that one can use to protect environmental degradation," said Ashok Jaiswal, vice-president, Manicktala Chaltabagan Durga puja committee.

The mounting concern to arrest environmental degradation resulting from traditional dependence on fossil fuel has led to the importance of shifting focus to harness renewable energy resources.

Both Manicktala Chaltabagan and Salt Lake BD Block have approached the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA), a state-level nodal agency under the department of Science and Technology and Non-Conventional Energy Sources, to help them out in their attempt to popularise green energy concept. With the help from WBREDA, the committees have tied up with private companies to hire energy lighting devices.

"This month we were approached by two Puja organisers who have shown interest in using energy saving lighting equipment to promote and make people aware of need to use non-conventional energy devices," said S P Gon Chaudhuri, former director, WBREDA.

While the interiors of Manicktala Chaltabagan pandal will be adorned with 15-20 solar energy bulbs, the committee members are also planning to put up 10-15 solar lighting pillars on the street leading to the pandal. Though their theme budget this year is Rs 10 lakh, the cost incurred for the solar lightings will be an additional one.

Salt Lake BD block, on the other hand, will have cubical chains of solar panels and LED bulbs displayed outside their pandals to create awareness and curiosity among the pandal hoppers.

"The message that we want to send out is that when there is an acute problem of pollution and severe dearth of electricity supply, the people of West Bengal have the option of using energy saving devices like solar lighting systems, solar fans and other solar and wind appliances to save the cost of energy," said Jaiswal.
