Fate Of Two Major Infrastructure Projects In The State Hangs In BalanceBy Nishant, Section News
After the Centre rejected the Nagerbazar flyover project that was proposed under GAP fundings, the West Bengal government is apprehensive about the fate of other two major infrastructure projects in the state.
The three major transport projects that the state government plans to execute are: the East-West Metro corridor project, elevated ring road project and the LRT from Panihati/Barrackpore to Joka/Bishnupur. The government had hoped to secure funds for the last two projects under GAP funding from the Centre. The state transport department has already received 10 bids for the proposed elevated ring road project. The Centre-state relation has undergone changes. They have struck down one proposal but now we are apprehensive about the fate of the other two," Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty said. The transport minister, however, hopes that the Centre will come forward with funds despite the differences between the two. He has also spoken to Union Minister Pranab Mukherjee urging him to ensure better cooperation between the Centre and the state on various projects in the state. Meanwhile, the state transport department has also rapped the ailing state transport corporations. The corporations have been asked to increase their earnings by at least Rs 100 crore by January 2009. Source: Express News Service 03/Sep/2008
