CU Admissions Through Counselling To The Masters' Level Courses In Arts And Commerce StreamsBy Shashank, Section Education
The Calcutta University (CU) would be organising conselling sessions as part of the admission procedure to the masters’ level courses in Arts and Commerce streams from next year onwards. This is the university’s attempt to make the process more systematic and less time-consuming.
The university has, at the same time, also decided to conduct a series of workshops to create awareness among teachers on the utility of counselling sessions. This comes after the teachers protested against the authorities’ decision to organise counselling sessions for students seeking admission to postgraduate degree courses this year. The programme had to be scrapped after the teachers protested against it. Admission to MA and MCom courses are currently based on the position obtained in the merit list. If in any of the departments seats remain vacant after the publication of the first merit, a second merit list is published. The entire process is quite lengthy and delays the start of the academic session. Click On "Full Story" For More...
Thus, to speed up the admission procedure, CU authorities have decided to conduct counselling sessions for students seeking admission in the masters level.
According to the new system that is being proposed by the authorities, a single merit list will be published by all the departments. A substantial number of students will be asked to appear for counselling on a fixed date. If anyone fails to turn up on the particular day, the immediate next candidate on the list gets the opportunity to appear for counselling and in the process, to be selected for admission. This will not only complete the entire admission procedure in fewer number of days but will also help the departments to have a clear picture on the number of vacant seats. Teachers who opposed implementing the new system this year argued that many students stay outside Kolkata and it might be difficult for some to attend the counselling session on a particular day. Moreover, in the current admission system, students are given over a week to enrol in postgraduate degree courses, which will not be possible if counselling is conducted by the departments. The CU-affiliated colleges that offer postgraduate degree courses, already enrol students through counselling. Source: The Statesman 03/Sep/2008
