The Shriniketan Santiniketan Development Authority (SSDA) is to modernise two crematoriums and one cemetery in Bolpur and Santiniketan. A proposal sent to SSDA in this regard has been approved by the authority, which is going to provide Rs 60 lakh for this purpose.
The Satighat Samsan and Sebapally Samsan crematoria and the Bolpur Kabarsthan are to be modernised under this plan.

The chief executive officer (CEO) of SSDA, Mr Ashok Kumar Das said: "We have decided to resolve the basic problems of the Satighat Samsan which is under the Bolpur Municipality. There the facilities of drinking water will be provided at the earliest. We have also decided to construct a permanent stage for burning dead bodies. The SSDA will also build a road through the cremation ground. For these development works the authorities have already allotted Rs 20 lakh."
SSDA will also modernise Sebapally Samsan and the Bolpur Kabarsthan, both are located in Santiniketan. For the modernisation of Sebapally Samsan Rs 20 lakh has been granted. Here too, there are problems of drinking water and poor road conditions that will be resolved under the development plan.

As for the Bolpur Kabarsthan, authorities have decided to construct roads as well as a concrete house for the mourners to stay. The SSDA authorities assured that the proposed work will be started within a month.

The people of Bolpur were pleased after learning of the plans for modernisation of the cremation grounds and cemetery. "The relatives and mourners have been suffering from the problem of shortage of drinking water for years. If SSDA comes forward to resolve these problems for the convenience of the people then it is something to rejoice about," said Mr Rathindra Saha, a resident of Bolpur.
