Lalu Nod To North-South MetroTo Dakshineswar Extension ProjectBy Nishant, Section Kolkata Metro
The state might get the existing north-south Metro extended up to Dakshineswar. Railway minister Lalu Prasad has principally agreed to undertake the project, said state transport minister Subhas Chakraborty on Thursday.
The state has requested the Centre to fund the project, as it did in the case of the Garia extension from Tollygunge. So far, the railways has funded two-thirds of the cost, while the state's share was one-third. But the new norm is that both the Centre and the state would share the costs 50:50. Chakraborty approached the railway minister over the extension issue during the all-India transport council meeting in New Delhi. "Laluji has agreed to consider our view. The total project cost would be Rs 535 crore. If the project works out, a large number of people will benefit," he said. Meanwhile, some problems have cropped up over choosing the site for the East-West Metro's underground platform at Howrah station. "Earlier, it had been decided that the Metro platform would be constructed 18 metres below platform 11 of Howrah station. But Eastern Railway has demanded Rs 40 crore for the relocation of underground services, which is too high. This would escalate the total project cost," Chakraborty said. The minister said now they are making other plans. "Instead of having the station below platform 11, we may build it below Foreshore Road. But for this, we need a clearance from both the Port Trust and the railways," he said. From Foreshore Road, the Howrah railway station needs to be linked to a tunnel.
Chakraborty said rumours are doing the rounds that because of the bitterness between Left and Congress, a lot of projects are facing uncertainty. "But I can tell you, there would be no difference in the fate of these projects. For instance, the Centre would bear 90% of the cost for the 89 jetties along the banks of the Ganga. The Centre would pay Rs 30 crore for the Rs 34-crore project. Already, the Centre had released Rs 11 crore. They would release another Rs 19 crore soon," he added. The other major project in which the Centre will have a major share is the Dum Dum passenger dispersal system worth Rs 80 crore. This project would have a 1-km-long elevated escalator that will help in dispersing a large number of pedestrians fast. Source: Times News Network 08/08/2008
