Purulia Poises Itself As Next Industrial Hub, Once Known As a 'No-Industry Zone'

The Purulia district, once known as a "no-industry zone" is now ready to be turned into an industrial hub.

Industrialists and the district administration have decided to set up industries in Raghunathpur, 60 km from Purulia town ~ an area close to Burnpur and Asansol. The presence of a panchayat dam further facilitates the setting up of industries in the area. Meanwhile, the Damodar Valley Corporation has already started construction work at their site.

The Jai Balaji Industries Limited is also ready to start construction work for their giant project. Earlier, even ten months after the foundation stone laying ceremony, they had failed to start work, because they were unable to acquire the required land, which delayed the project.

They are now planning to invest Rs 16,000 crore in a 5 million tonne integrated steel plant, a 3 million tonne cement factory and a captive power plant of 1,215 megawatts on 3, 800 acres of land at Durmut, Raghunathpur.

Another big unit, the Adhunik Group of Industries is also ready to start the construction work of their grand project.

They would be investing Rs 7,200 crore for setting up a 11 lakh tonne integrated steel plant, a 10 lakh tonne cement plant and a captive power plant of 1,125 MW on 2,300 acres of land, at Rukni in Raghunathpur, Purulia.
Representatives of the unit met the chief minister last week to apprise him of the progress made so far.

Shyam Steel is waiting for a clearance for setting their own industry in Raghunathpur.
Although a number of industrialists are keen on setting up industries in Raghunathpur, most of them expressed their displeasure during last week's one-day industrial strike, when the Kushal Polysacks, a nine-year-old factory at Jhalda, decided to close down the unit the next day because of the attitude of the Left leaders.
After two days, the closure was withdrawn, as the leaders admitted their fault.

Even construction work at Damodar Valley Corporation had to be stopped for a day. However, the main architect of the industrial hub, Mr Basudeb Acharia, MP, is still hopeful about the success of the project. "We shall overcome all hurdles," he said.
