The Visva Bharati authorities have announced the establishment of two new buildings in Santiniketan. The constructions seek to accommodate an increased student body subsequent to the government's order of 27 per cent reservation for other backward class (OBC) students.

The two new buildings will accommodate students of Vidya Bhavan and Science department of the university. Both buildings are designed to be four storeys tall. The one scheduled to be built near Vidya Bhavan Angan of Santiniketan will benefit students of Vidya Bhavan and the other to be constructed near Andrew's Pally will benefit students of the Science department.

After the two buildings are erected there will be no shortage of classrooms for the next 20 years, said university authorities.

“Within two months the preliminary work of the two new buildings will be started. The plan, design and formalities have been made,” said a senior official of Visva Bharati.

According to reports, beginning this year, the government ordered the university to reserve 27 per cent seats for OBC candidates. In order to counter the reduction of seats for general candidates, courtesy the implementation of the OBC reservation, the university increased the number of seats for general candidates as well. Thus, the total number of seats increased by 54 per cent.
