West Bengal Draws Rs 87,037 cr Across Huge Investments From Various Sectors in 2008: AssochamBy Nishant, Section Business
In the first half of the present year, West Bengal has attracted investments to the tune of Rs 87,037 crore across various sectors which has the potential to generate 30,000 jobs over a period of two to five years, a survey by Assocham said.
The steel sector with an investment of Rs 23,300 crore had attracted maximum funds. Companies in the oil and gas sector had also announced a capital expenditure plan of Rs 20,000 crore. Corporate house like Videocon Limited had decided to set up two knowledge parks in Kalyani and Siliguri with a capital outlay of Rs 6,000 crore. On the tourism front, leading real estate giant Emaar MGF had announced its foray into the hospitality sector with an investment of Rs 4,150 crore, the survey said. Engineering segment also gained momentum with Rs 2,500 crore announced by L&T. IT and retail has huge scope and its potential has been largely untapped, stated the survey.
