NGOs To Launch Movement Against SEZ And State Govt's Policy Of Evicting Villagers To Set Up Ind

The Institute for Motivating Self-Employment (IMSE) has urged non-government organisations to generate awareness among people regarding the state government's policy of evicting villagers to set up industries.

While speaking at the citizen's convention on Special Economic Zone and its impact on the people of the state, Mr Biplab Halim, executive director of IMSE said it is totally unjustified to evict villagers and invite industrialists, who would be given ample facilities. Mr Halim said the villagers will find very few employment opportunities in these industries. "It is the duty of the NGOs to come forward and help villagers to assess the situation and also generate awareness amongst them to fight against anti people policies of the government ," Mr Halim observed.

Criticising the chief minister's recent assurances of not taking away land forcefully from people, Mr Dipak Ghosh, former Trinamul Congress MLA leader said: "All these assurances are fake and the sole aim behind these assurances is to draw sympathy and support from the people," Mr Ghosh said that SEZ will help in the development of only 5 per cent of the population. The people who give away their land might neither get the compensation amount nor the employment opportunities promised by the government.
Referring to instances where villagers have opposed to give away their land, Mr Biplab Chakraborty, Suci leader, who was also present for the occasion, said a woman in Dankuni, who has been selected as a SEZ, argued that the government will offer a job to only one amongst her six sons thus the other five will be left unemployed .

"In another occasion some villagers refused to speak to us unless we disclosed our political affiliation," said Mr Chakraborty.
