The West Bengal government today announced setting up of the state's Fifth Pay Commission for recommending new wage structure for its 10 lakh employees, following the adoption of the sixth pay panel's report by the Centre.

Finance minister Asim Dasgupta, after a discussion with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said the notification of the pay commission and other details including the terms of reference would be announced about a week's time and it would start working from the middle of next month.

Altogether 10 lakh government employees, teachers and other staff would be benefited along with over four lakh pensioners, he said.

The pay revision at the state level was necessary following the effect of the Sixth Pay Commission at the Centre, he said.

Dasgupta also said the state government would demand 50 per cent of the financial burden from the Centre for giving effect to the pay revision.

The sharing of the financial burden would also be discussed at the next conference of all Finance Ministers on August 29, along with the matters concerning Centre-State relations, he said.

The Fourth State Pay Commission was set up on November 27, 1995 under Justice Haridas Das, which submitted its first report on April 1998 and the final one on July 2000. The recommendation was implemented with effect from January 1, 1996, Dasgupta said.
