UGC DecideOne-Time Grant For Cash-Strapped Colleges To Develop Their InfrastructureBy Shashank, Section News
The colleges and universities that do not receive any financial assistance from University Grants Commission (UGC) have funding coming their way.
The UGC has decided to provide a special one-time grant to these institutes to help them to develop their infrastructure in order to enable them to avail regular grants from the Centre. The colleges and universities that do not meet the requisite UGC norms in infrastructure, faculty count, postgraduate departments and curriculum are not given any grants by UGC.
“The colleges and universities that are deprived of the Centre's financial assistance will be given a separate kind of financial assistance,” said Prof Sukhdeo Thorat, chairman of UGC. Around 373 districts across the country have been identified by UGC as educational backward districts of which 15 belong to the state. Currently Rs 10 lakh is given to the districts to upgrade infrastructure of colleges. UGC will increase this grant in the XI Plan. Source: Statesman News Service 28/July/2008
