WBUT Trouble For Engineering Colleges For Filling Up Vacant Seats By Unfair MeansBy Shashank, Section Education
The West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) has decided to conduct a probe into the allegations levelled against private engineering colleges for filling up vacant seats by unfair means.
Around 3,000 seats in the private engineering colleges are currently lying vacant after students fail to qualify for the next semester. Last year, there were 1,500 vacant seats in these colleges. According to the rules, if any student fails to qualify for the next year during the four-year course, that particular seat continues to remain vacant until the completion of the batch. Colleges cannot admit students in second, third and fourth year of the course. However, some colleges have been reportedly using unfair means to fill up such seats and giving admission in second, third and fourth year of the course to fill up the vacancies. This has brought them under the scanner of the WBUT and it has decided to conduct an inquiry into the allegation. “It is learnt that few colleges are conducting admission and filling up such seats in second, third and fourth years, which is totally illegal. We have also heard that students who manage the back-door entry have to pay a hefty amount to the management of the college,” said a WBUT official. Click On "Full Story" For More...
Apart from the one-time admission fees, students pay fees every semester along with other fees charged. So whenever a student drops out, the seat goes unoccupied and the college has to bear the loss.
Meanwhile, complaints of students using unfair means in the examination and the lenient invigilation procedure of the colleges have also been brought under the scanner. Prof. Sabyasachi Sengupta, vice chancellor of WBUT, said: “We are probing into the allegations. The university is concerned about the large number of seats that are going vacant. It is a loss to the colleges as well as students since many could have pursued engineering course in these seats.” A meeting was held in the university three days back on this matter. The issue will now be taken up with the higher education department as well as West Bengal Higher Education Council. “We are considering ways whereby these seats can be filled. Under the usual norm, such seats remain vacant but considering the large number of vacant seats, we might come up with some solution,” said Prof Sengupta.
