Jadavpur University and Bankim Bhavan Gabesana Kendra (Bankim Research Centere), will jointly initiate work for renovation and modernisation of the museum cum archive centre in the name of writer Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya at Kanthalpara near Naihati in North 24-Parganas from this month.
Kanthalpara in Naihati is the birth place of the famous Bengali literary giant Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya. It is situated in the industrial regions of suburban Kolkata. An archive was made in Bankim's house, where various items related to his memorial are displayed there, the house was his ancestral home. He wrote many of his excellent literature and other works in this house. Readers' of Bankim often visited this home to offer their respect and also came to see the items on display. Earlier a research centre was set up by a group of his admirers, who had taken an initiative earlier to repair his home which was in a dilapidated condition. The museum is presently situated in the ground floor of his house. But the authorities of the research centre wanted to expand the museum. "A third floor will be made in the building for his museum. We have three kathas of land here to build a museum in his name," said an official of the research centre. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya (1838-94), was an Indian nationalist writer, from Bengal. He also popularised a Bengali prose style that became the vehicle of the major nationalist literature of the region. In 1872 he founded the Bangadarshan, a journal, modelled on the Spectator which was published from this house. He frequently used the pseudonym Ramchandra and also wrote many novels in this home, which combined political and philosophical commentary with historical romance. His favourite theme was India as a divine motherland. Click On "Full Story" For More..
Mr Mrinal Sen, MP(Rajya Sabha) gave Rs 25 lakh to the research centre to build this museum separately on the three kathas of land. As the campus is located near the railway station therefore former railway minister promised to give a separate land from the railway's possession to build a museum, but he did not arrange for that later. Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav however sanctioned the rail land to the build the museum. State government also donated Rs 6 lakh to build the museum.
Bankim Chandra himself constructed a house as his library in 1886. This library room was converted to a museum in 1952, after the state government acquired the house to preserve the history of this legendary writer. His ancestors once had more than 150 bighas of land in and surrounding areas. But during the construction of the railway line, those lands were forcibly occupied by the East India Company in the pre-independence era. But a portion of the land, where his house was situated, was not acquired after Lord Carzon took the initiative to save this house. During the pre-independent period, refugees occupied many portions of the land. Later the government helped to vacate some portion of the land, where a college was also made in his name. Many of his used items like sezbati (lamp for reading purpose), pagri (turban), shawl and cash box of `Banga Darshan' attract people, who come to revisit his memory. Manuscripts of Avigayana Sakuntalam, and invitation letters sent by Dijendranath Thakur are also preserved here. The research centre is trying to collect the historic letters that were sent to historian Haraprasad Shastri by some erudites in Indian culture, among them are Lord Carzon and Lord Liton.
