Howrah To Get India's First Nanotech Unit At Sankrail

Writers' Buildings seems to be excited over a different Nano for the moment. For, the country's first nanotechnology plant is all set to start functioning at Sankrail in neighbouring Howrah from August, exactly two months before the much-hyped Nano rolls out of Singur in Hooghly.

The nanotechnology plant -- as its name suggests -- is a small affair but quite a weighty feather in the state's cap, considering that it is the most happening thing in world research and no other state in the country boasts of such a plant.

In fact, it was at the instance of chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's office that the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) overcame all red tape and formalities to hand over the land in Sankrail in just three days. The government was all the more enthusiastic because the proposals had come from two young NRIs from England, Devashish Dabriwal (31) and Shivaprasad Bevinmarad (29). They had tied up with the New Jersey-based NEI Corporation for technical cooperation.

"They (United Nanotech Products) are using the most modern technology available in the world. This is a very prestigious proposition for our state. All over the world, there is a huge demand for nanotechnology-related products," said Arabinda Mukhopadhyay, deputy general manager of WBIDC.

he Rs 12.5-crore unit will produce nano-sized cathode material used in lithium ion batteries. Since the batteries are used in electricity-operated cars and motorcycles, the entire product (113 tonnes in the initial phase) will be exported. "Our initial market will be the South-East Asian countries like Taiwan, Korea and Japan," said Dabriwal, director of United Nanotech Products.
"We hope to get very good returns because there is a huge demand for our products worldwide. The trial run will begin in August and the entire production will start from early October," said Bevinmarad, his partner and president of the company.

Incidentally, the more popular Nano (the Tata small car) will also be launched around the same time. "Who knows, small car batteries may use cathode material (or nanotechnology material) and the Tatas may be interested too," said an industries department official.

There is only one hiccup in the spirited venture. That is dearth of skilled workers. So far, 400 persons have applied and barely four of them are employable. "That's a disappointment because we had heard a lot about West Bengal's talent pool. We are not asking for very high qualifications. some diploma chemical engineers only. But most of the applicants do not even know the basics," said Dabriwal.

The company has now decided to train the greenhorns in nanotechnology. "We can get our US partner for the training," said Dabriwal, adding, "They (US partners) will be here during the commissioning of the plant."
