To Improve The Fish Yield In West Bengal, Satellites To Tell Fishermen Where To FishBy ugesh sarkar, Section Development
To improve the fish yield in West Bengal, the Government of India will fund the installation of electronic display boards in the five coastal areas of the state to help the fishermen locate potential fishing areas in Bay of Bengal.
The Potential Fishing Zone Validation in West Bengal Coastal Seas -- a project being carried out under the aegis of the School of Oceanographic Studies and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) aims to study the potential fishing zones through satellite and validate whether the amount of fish catch has any relation with the satellite predictions. "We have found that the fishermen are not able to exploit the satellite predictions. While sometimes they do not have proper access to information, in other cases most of the fishing community is not educated enough to grasp the satellite data," said Sugata Hazra, professor, School of Oceanographic Studies. Experts said a request was made to provide five electronic display boards in the form of plasma television sets at all the five centres to dissipate information among fishermen. Last month, the Centre gave its nod to go ahead with the proposal. Click On "Full Story" For More..
Kakdeep, Namkhana, Petuaghat, Frasergunj and Sankarpur have been chosen as the areas where the School of Oceanographic Studies and the West Bengal fisheries department will provide the technology.
INCOIS has also engaged a Bangalore-based company to provide plasma TV sets. Engineers from the company are scheduled to visit the areas this month. Experts believe that the inspection work will complete by July last. The work for installing the TV sets will start from October. The information will be displayed in Bengali. According to project experts, the identification of these potential fishing zones will help to increase the total fish catch by 30 to 70 per cent. "Our research also involves training the local fishermen to understand the Global Positioning System. We have already trained around 30 boat captains in Digha and Sunderbans," said Hazra. The research also involves upgrading the methodology of satellite forecasting in Sunderbans and Digha coastal regions. The project, which will be completed in 2012, has INCOIS and the government of India as its funding agencies. Source: Mohana Dam From Indian Express 16/July/08
