Schools Set To Go Hi-Tech, Parents Will BenefitBy ugesh sarkar, Section Kolkata in Cyberspace
In days to come, parents may not have to lose sleep over their child's performance at school or stand in long queues to pay the school fees, as schools in Kolkata are preparing to go hi-tech. While some schools are upgrading and developing their websites, others are trying to come up with short message service (SMS) and personalised email service for parents.
After Delhi Public School, the South Point Education Society has said that by October it would launch an SMS-based communication system through which the parents will be updated about school activities and emergency holidays. "The school will integrate an SMS software with its server, through which notifications will be sent to parents," confirmed Krishna Damani, spokesperson, South Point School. Parents will be alerted not only about events like parent-teacher meetings but also about the emergency holidays in the school. The management will also introduce an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) facility on the school telecom system for those who do not have a mobile phone. Click On "Full Story" For More..
La Martiniere is also contemplating a similar service. "At times, management has to declare holidays due to waterlogging or strike. An SMS alert service for parents will be a convenient option. But the proposal is under consideration," said S Chakravarty, principal of the school.
Some schools such as South Point and St James will also provide personalised e-mail service to all the students and teachers with school domain addresses. "We will provide personalised email IDs to all the 12,500 students, 550 teachers and non-teaching staff," said Damani. "The email ID will consist of the first name, the six digit student identity number, followed by a `southpoint.edu.in' domain name." Barring the SMS and email service, schools such as St James, Birla High, Assembly of God Church and GD Birla already have the option of their own website, while South Point will introduce it soon. "The website will have all the information regarding school events and the parents will be given separate IDs to communicate directly with teachers," said Damani. He added, "The website will also contain the information about which school bus goes via which route to make it easier for parents to choose the mode of transport for their children." The school is also planning to come up with an integrated system of fees payment through Internet. Source: Express News Service 14/July/2008
