State Govt Decide To Set Up Another Taxi Meter Calibration Centre at Salt Lake StadiumBy ugesh sarkar, Section Local Taxi Cab Experiences
How many times have you cribbed after being fleeced by a taxi driver? The state government has now decided to stop passengers from being taken for a ride by cabbies.
So, it has decided to set up another Taxi Meter Calibration Centre at Salt Lake Stadium, which will start functioning from next month. This will be the second such hi-tech centre in the country. The rules require taxi owners to get their meters tested every six months and obtain certificates. "The process is indeed cumbersome. Till now, there is only one taxi meter calibration office on Southern Avenue. Only 100 taxis are able to get their meters checked after standing in queue for a day," said a transport department official. The one which the government is planning will be a comprehensive taxi meter calibration centre. It will be a drive-in and a drive-out facility. "The vehicle drives into the centre, gets on to a lane and then on to a platform. A speedometer rotates the wheel of the vehicle. The vehicle gets into position and the speedometer rotates the cars to some revolutions, which are adequate up to 3 km. The reading is aided by a computer and a camera. After calculations, it is checked whether the fare is in tune with the distance travelled and then a certificate is given to the drivers," said Vishal Agarwal, director of Bhagwan Das Vehicle Test Services Pvt Ltd. Taxi owners will have to shell out Rs 320 every six months for the calibration test. "There will be six lanes and every car will take only five minutes to undergo the test. Every hour, meters of 72 taxis can be analysed," Agarwal added. The project, a joint venture, will cost around Rs 3-4 crore. There will be a lounge and a restaurant for the drivers.
At present, there are around 20,000 taxis plying in the city and its nearby areas. "The taxis are required to undergo the meter calibration test once every six months. Though we have not yet decided to make frequent checks, taxi drivers will have to conduct the test again if their meters are found tampered with," said transport secretary Sumantra Chaudhuri. On Monday, a meeting has been convened by transport department officials to decide a date in August on which the Taxi Meter Calibration Centre will start functioning.
