Railway Station Near Kolkata May Be Linked With MetroBy Riti, Section Kolkata Metro
With the Bimanbandar station near airport here, set up eyeing flight passengers, becoming unviable, the railway authorities are planning to link it with the Metro Railway.
"Thought we had built Bimanbandar station keeping in mind the rise in passengers' demand coming by flights, we will now have to think about other ways as the travelers don't opt for this facility," chief personal relation manager (Eastern Railway) Dipak Jha told reporters. Railway authorities have recently spent Rs 1.2 lakh for a survey to study about how this route commencing from Sealdah to Dum Dum cantonment in North 24 Parganas can be attached with the Metro Railway. "The metro railway is conducting the survey and after their submitting the report, we will decide to implement the project or not," Jha said. Click on Full Story for More.
Pointing out the ground reality, the Joint Secretary of Railway Jatri Samity, Swapan Bharati said: "there are only two trains in a day- the first one comes at 7.20 am in the morning and the second one at 9.30 pm. But the first flight reaches the N S C Bose International Airport at 7.20 am, the very time of the train's arrival."
"After that it takes another 20 minutes for the check out and naturally an air passenger cannot board the train. People could have availed the train had the authorities been careful in fixing the time schedule," Bharati said. To compound the matters worse for the air passengers, the second and last train of the day is scheduled at 9.30 pm. "This is ridiculous. Unless the railway authority increases the number of trains, the situation will not improve," general secretary, Airport Authority Employees Union, Dipankar Ghosh said. Besides, the station is located in a "far away" place from the domestic and international terminal forcing passengers to walk for at least 10 minutes before climbing stairs to reach a 300-metre high platform, he said. "The passengers, with their huge luggage, will certainly be reluctant to trudge the way and instead, they opt for a taxi," he said. "The average sale of tickets is not more than 20 and these passengers come from nearby Kamalpur and Arai areas and go to Sealdah for their work," station manager Pinaki Ghosh said.
