Kolkata is all set to become the cultural hub of India with several institutions and organisations setting up cultural centres in the city.
The most recent is the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) which set up the Rabindranath Tagore Centre in Kolkata, built over 3442.5 sq metres for a cost of Rs 18 crore. According to Pavan Varma, director general of ICCR, "Kolkata is conceived as the hub of cultural activities because of its rich heritage. We therefore thought of building the property here." "The centre will be host to several artists from the neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, among others. The international artists will host seminars, exhibitions, lectures at the centre round the year," Varma added. The Rabindranath Tagore Centre was originally designed by Charles Correa and later revised and completed by architect Dulal Mukherjee. The centre, built on 3442.5 sq metres, was allotted in 1990 to the Ministry of External Affairs by the government of West Bengal. Although ICCR has regional offices covering the major cities in India, this is its first cultural centre. Click On "Full Story" For More...
The centre is spread over four floors, with multiple art galleries over three floors.
The second floor will house a library and archives with focus on cultural and social history. On the fourth floor is Maulana Azad Conference Centre, with a series of lecture and seminar rooms, and a business centre. There are several guest rooms for visiting artistes. Satyajit Ray Auditorium on the ground level has a seating capacity of 280. There will be a café and a souvenir shop on the premises. The mandate of the ICCR is to promote culture beyond borders. The aim is to explore and promote cultural, academic and artistic exchanges in the region and beyond. Keeping with the spirit of Tagore's faith in universalism, the centre will aim to become a hub of cultural activities inviting international participation with considerable local interaction. International exhibitions, cultural programmes, interactive seminars, lectures, and film festivals, will be a part of the centre. While the Bengal Gallery on the first floor will be reserved for exhibitions on loan from the government of West Bengal, the Abanindranath Tagore Gallery on the second floor, the Nandalal Bose Gallery and Jamini Roy Gallery on the third floor, and the Ramkinkar Baij Sculpture Court on the second floor will host various exhibitions of sculptures, paintings, textiles, handicrafts, installation art, etc. Rabindranath Tagore Centre will soon post on its website the modalities for renting out its galleries, lecture rooms and auditorium.
