Kolkata Municipal Corporation uninterrupted power plan flops

The much-hyped plan of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to supply uninterrupted power to the pumping stations of the city during monsoons, to pump out stagnant water as early as possible has fallen flat after the KMC failed to start work on time.

Initially, the civic body planned to bring three main pumping stations of the city ~ Dhapa Lock Gate Pumping Station, Palmer Bazaar Pumping Station, and the Ballygunge Drainage Pumping Stations ~ under the project.
However, civic officials pointed out that nearly 90 per cent work for the project has been completed so far. As a result, questions are being raised whether the project would solve the water logging problem of the city at all in this season.

Citing reasons for the delay, civic officials said that one problem that arose at the time of laying the new electricity connections, was ensuring that the pumps and other existing electrical connections in the pumping stations remained unaffected, at the time of laying the new cables turned out to be a difficult task for the civic authorities.

"We had to ensure that the functioning of the pumping stations and the pumps do not get affected in any way at the time of laying the new cables. This made the entire process laborious and time consuming," a civic engineer said.
Meanwhile, a CESC official on conditions of anonymity claimed that the CESC had completed the process of laying the cables and other necessary commitments on time.

"We completed our part of the work on time. It must be some internal matter of the civic body that has held up the work," the official said.
It may be recalled that long hours of power cuts had affected the functioning of several pumping stations of the civic body last year. Officials claimed that the pumps could not function properly leading to widespread water logging in the city. The Ultadanga Pumping Station was one of the worst affected stations and this in turn caused water logging in the area.

Accordingly, a plan to provide uninterrupted power to the pumping stations was mooted. Discussions were also held with the CESC authorities and it was then decided that the only solution available was to have an alternate electricity line for different pumping stations.
