With an aim to fill the gaps that emerge when one opts for a conventional modern education, the first private university of West Bengal, Ramakrisha Mission Vivekananda University, offers many unconventional courses to its students.

Established under section 3 of the UGC Act the university was given the status of a deemed university in July 2005. It provides courses on subjects as varied as rural and tribal development, disability management and special education, fundamental science education and Indian cultural and spiritual heritage.

The varsity’s “School of Mathematical Science” will start its academic activities from July 2008.

“We have three disciplines, theoretical physics, pure mathematics and basic computer science. The university will admit only 15 students in each of these disciplines this year,” said Swami Atmapriyananda, the Vice-Chancellor of the university. It will also offer a five-year integrated MSc in pure mathematics and theoretical computer science and M Phil in theoretical physics. Officials of the university feel that these areas require immediate attention and are highly neglected.

The classes will be conducted at the main campus of the university at Belur and at Vivekananda Research Centre, the ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda in Kolkata.

The university has also set up the “School of Indian Heritage” another thrust area, where the students can opt for Indian cultural and spiritual heritage, including value education.

Under this programme, the university is providing an integrated five-year MA in Sanskrit along with computer application and English.

“The students should be adept in English and computer application. Just learning Sanskrit will not be enough,” said Swami Atmapriyananda. The course was started in 2007 with 10 students.

The university has also started an integrated M Phil and PhD in ‘Ancient Indian Scientific Heritage’ with six students pursuing the programme. The problem in conducting such a programme, the Vice-Chancellor feels, is that those who read the scriptures are not aware about science and those well versed in science cannot appreciate the ancient scientific wisdom in the scriptures.

The university is also conducting these courses at its specialised faculty centres throughout the country. Other unconventional areas that the varsity is touching are disability management and special education at Coimbatore, integrated rural development including tribal development and management with centres at Ranchi and Narendrapur.
