Result goof:High Court fines exam controllerBy Riti, Section Education
Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered the controller of examination of Burdwan University (BU) to pay a fine of Rs 1,700 for issuing a faulty marksheet to Rinku Das, an MA examinee. The money is to be paid to Das as cost of her suffering.
While passing the order and disposing of the petition, Justice Soumitra Pal pulled up BU, saying such a lapse by the varsity was not expected and could not be tolerated. Das appeared for her MA in political science last year. When the result was published, her marksheet showed that she had got a zero in the 8th paper although she had passed in the other seven papers. Das moved Calcutta High Court, praying that her answer script be produced. But the controller of exam did not respond to her request. After a court notice was served, BU officials rushed to Das' house and requested her to take a fresh marksheet, which was issued on May 21. It showed she had got 43 in the 8th paper and passed MA in the second class. On Thursday, Das' counsel Susanta Bhattacharya told the court about the out-of-court settlement and said that his client was not interested in pursuing it Justice Pal, however, said the vice-chancellor and the controller should be more cautious about publishing results in the future.
