Baghajatin Flyover Opens Today, Which Has Been Closed For More Than 9 Months Due To Repair WorkBy Nishant, Section Roads in Kolkata
The Baghajatin flyover, which has been closed for more than nine months due to repair work, will be opened to vehicular traffic from Wednesday, much to the relief of daily commuters. They have been facing trouble every day to cross the stretch since September last year.
Senior KMDA officials went to inspect the flyover on Tuesday to check whether everything was ready for traffic movement to resume. "The repair is complete. The flyover will be opened to traffic from Wednesday," said KMDA director general (operations) Debdas Bhattacharya. ![]() It all started on August 17 last year when a two-foot-wide crater developed in the middle of the flyover. Traffic movement continued for some days by cordoning off the crater and closing one flank of the flyover to vehicles. However, after an inspection, KMDA engineers decided that the damaged portion should be dismantled and constructed afresh. It was found that the building material used was not up to the mark, the reason why the crater had appeared so soon. Click On "Full Story" For More..
However, it took more than four months for the work to actually begin as there was a controversy regarding who should take on the repair work - Kolkata Municipal Development Authority (KMDA) or the railways. KMDA said it was the railways' responsibility to repair the damaged part as the flyover runs over the Baghajatin railway station. The railways, however, said the work should be taken up by KMDA as they never signed an agreement on the maintenance of the flyover.
Urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya then intervened and it was decided that Ircon, the agency appointed by the railways, would carry out the repair work as the portion of the bridge where the crater had developed was constructed by it. March 31 had been originally set the deadline to complete the work, but there was a delay of another two months due to technical problems. KMDA has further plans to widen the two-lane flyover into a four-lane one to assist their ongoing project of widening the EM Bypass stretch into a 10-lane corrido Source: Times News Network 11-Jun-2008
