If you have to use the EM Bypass on a regular basis, this should come as good news. The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has decided to lay mastic asphalt on the Bypass and its connectors, heralding a smoother drive.
The 17-km EM Bypass, that once brought relief to motorists, is pockmarked with potholes and craters. The condition worsens during monsoon, leading to traffic jams on the Ultadanga-Garia stretch. KMDA often does patchwork, which lasts a couple of months.
The go-ahead for the mastic asphalt cover was given at the last meeting of the KMDA's executive board. Rs 8.9 crore has also been granted for the work, to be executed in phases.
The first phase of the work will begin this year on the stretch between Ultadanga and Parama Island.
KMDA, in the tender agreement to be released soon, has come up with a rider. The agency selected for the work will have to repair and maintain the Bypass for the next five years.
"This will help the authorities save funds and get rid of a regular burden," said P B Nag, the development employees joint action committee secretary.
KMDA is also implementing the EM Bypass widening project from Ultadanga to Garia in phases. The entire stretch will be turned into an eight-lane corridor.
The Bypass will also be extended from Garia to Kamalgaji. Service roads will also come up on both sides of the Park Circus connector.
