The Higher Education Council on Wednesday declared that colleges can start distributing admission forms from June 2. Admissions to colleges will begin on June 23 and first year classes from July 15.

The universities will notify the criteria and admission cut-off marks to their affiliated colleges by June 2. All the colleges in North 24-Parganas will be notified by the new university established in Barasat. Colleges in North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda will be notified by the North Bengal University.

However, Raiganj college will be notified by Gour Bangiya University.

"The decision was taken for the benefit of students. The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE) will be conducted on May 24 and the results will be published by the second week of June. So, those who qualify for JEE will not be forced to seek admission to a general course. According to the Supreme Court order, all results will have to be published by June 15," said state chairman of higher education council, Subimal Sen.

The colleges were happy with the new arrangement. Principals felt that with students now being able to download admission forms from college websites, there will be less harassment and confusion. Most city colleges have decided to start admission only after receiving the goahead from CU.

At Presidency College, the teachers' council is yet to decide whether admission tests are to be held for Bengali, mathematics, geology and physiology. "The council has decided to refer the matter to the higher education board for suggestion. For the other 14 honours subjects, admission tests will be conducted," said Presidency College principal Sanjeeb Ghosh.

Others like Lady Brabourne College are also waiting for directions from CU. "The students can apply and submit the admission forms online on our website www.ladybrabourne.com," said principal Sanghamitra Mukherjee. The college will hold admission tests for English and economics while candidates for microbiology will have to appear for interviews. For arts, students require 50% to 60% aggregate while anyone with 70% aggregate can apply for sociology.

For Bethune College, students can download forms from its website www.bethuneadmissions.ac.in. "We will decide the date after a green signal from the CU," said principal Manimala Das. The college will admit students on the basis of the scores on the best five subjects, excluding environment science marks in higher secondary examinations.

Maulana Azad College will distribute forms only from its campus on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. "Once the university gives the go-ahead, we will start distributing forms. We will give out forms for four days," said principal Pratap Chandra De.

Asutosh College had earlier decided to start the online distribution of forms from Wednesday. "We have postponed the date till further notice from Calcutta University. The students, however, can start checking the website www.asutoshcollege.com from June 2," said principal Debabrata Chaudhury.

Heramba Chandra College will take in students directly on the basis of their Plus II scores for eight honours subjects. There are 250 seats to be filled up.
