One of the country's premier builders, DLF Home Developers Ltd, has been penalized by the state government for carrying out construction at an upcoming residential complex in New Town, Rajarhat, without clearance from the environment department.
DLF has coughed up Rs 5 lakh the maximum possible fine for violating the central government's environment laws at `New Town Heights', a planned cluster of nine-tower condominiums spread over 15 acres of land. The residential complex will be designed by Hafeez Contractor.
"As per the Centre's notification issued on September 14, 2006, if anyone goes ahead with construction without taking environmental clearance where it is needed, he will have to pay a fine," said secretary of the environment department, M L Meena.
During the hearing on April 24, senior law officer Biswajeet Mukherjee pulled up DLF. The construction bigwig admitted its lapse and assured that it would comply with statutory norms in future. "We have paid the fine of Rs 5 lakh to the environment department," confirmed Moumita Kumar, legal assistant manager of DLF Home Developers Ltd. The government has decided not to take any legal action.
