Polling Till Midnight, Repoll In 4 Booths Of NandigramBy siddharth22, Section News
Amid instances of violence and a face off between the local administration and the CRPF, over 90 per cent people exercised their democratic rights in Nandigram, said State Election Commission Special Secretary S N Roychowdhury on on Monday.
He added that given the huge turnout, polling continued till midnight in various booths in Nandigram. Fresh polling has been ordered at four booths. The Commission has notified that repolling will be conducted at booth 83 in Kalicharanpur gram panchayat area, booth 104 in Sonachura gram panchayat and booth 26 and 26 A in Mahammadpur gram panchayat on May 13. Overall, repolls will be held at 23 booths across the four districts, which went to polls in the first phase of voting in the three-tier panchayat election on Sunday. Repolls in 16 booths of Burdwan, Bankura and East Midnapore will be held on May 13 while seven booths in West Midnapore will go for repoll on May 14. Till now, the Commission has not ordered repolls in any booth in Purulia. The percentage of votes polled in Burdwan is 84 per cent and in Bankura 85.4. In East Midnapore and West Midnapore, votes polled have exceeded 90 per cent, said state Election Commission officials.
Notification for repolling was issued after the district election officer, the District Magistrate, declared the polling to be null and void on basis of recommendations of presiding officers and returning officers, Roychowdhury said.
On why polling continued till midnight, he said that the percentage of voting in each hour was 7 to 8. Even if polling continued at the same rate it would have taken about 13 hours for the voters to cast their votes. "The panchayat elections cannot be compared with Assembly elections. Each voter has to cast three votes one for the gram panchayat, one for panchayat samity and one for zilla parishad. The whole process is manual and hence very time-consuming," said Roychowdhury. "There was a Nor'wester in Bankura and Burdwan and the polling process was hit for a few hours due to this," said Roychowdhury. The second round of polling will begin on May 14 when Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas will go for elections. Source:The Indian Express,13-05-08
