Adopt Saplings To Save Environment, Says Kolkata Municipal CorporationBy siddharth22, Section Environment
Adopt a sapling and save the environment. This has been the slogan of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in an attempt to save plants from untimely death.
Though the civic body has been distributing and planting lakhs of saplings to increase the city's green cover, lack of care has thwarted the very aim of the endeavour. Only 20% of the nearly 1.5 lakh saplings that KMC parks department distributed last year to NGOs and individuals managed to survive. Eight in every 10 died for want of care. The civic body tried to make up for the loss by opening camps in places like Shyambazar-Hatibagan crossing, College Street, New Market, Bhowanipore, Gariahat, Behala where saplings of a large variety of trees (including chhatim, krishnachura, radhachura, saal, palash and mahogany) were distributed. A year down the line, a survey by the KMC parks department found that a majority of the saplings planted in these areas have died. Again, for want of care. It is not that care of these saplings is too costly. A tree guard and regular watering is sufficient to keep a sapling alive. However, as the KMC does not provide tree guards, NGOs, clubs and individuals do not buy them either. And the result is obvious long stretches of major thoroughfares like APC Road, AJC Bose Road, Chittaranjan Avenue, Tollygunge Circular Road, Diamond Harbour Road, Netaji Subhas Bose and Subodh Mullick Road are without trees, in spite of heavy plantation.
Unable to look after these saplings, the civic authorities now encourage business communities to come forward and play a leading role in saving the greenery. "We will allow businessmen to adopt as many saplings as possible in a certain area. If they perform satisfactorily, we will ask them to take up the job of protecting more saplings," said MMiC (parks and gardens) Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan. In lieu, the business houses can display advertisements of their products.
And a KMC team will undertake periodical surveys to ascertain the condition of saplings. KMC plans to distribute saplings of flowering and fruit-bearing plants across the city. "People can plant these saplings at their homes and nurture them," a senior KMC parks department official said. Source:The Times Of India,13-05-08
