Dept Of KMC Is Preparing The Method That Will Be Followed To Collect Water Fees From House Owners

The water supply department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is preparing the methodology that will be followed to collect water fees from house owners using 25 mm and 20 mm ferrule.

The decision was taken at a meeting held in the chamber of the municipal commissioner Mr Alapan Bandopadhyay on 23 March. Senior civic officials of revenue and Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP) wings were present at the meeting. However, the date from when the water fees will be imposed has not yet been finalised.

It may be recalled that the mayor Mr Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya had announced imposition of water fees while presenting the municipal budget for 2008-09. Work is on in full swing to prepare a flawless methodology and impose water charges.
This is the first time the water supply department has been entrusted to prepare the methodology for collection of water fees. The assessment-collection department used to collect the fees. The head of the department has been asked to help the water supply department with the data base. A senior civic official said earlier the assessment-collection department used to raise the bills and that had created confusion.

The director general (water supply) department has been asked to cross-check the existing bulk meter connections and those left out will be included in the data base. Civic authorities expect there will be 20 per cent enhancement in the number of bulk meter connections in the city.

Though the civic authorities maintain that installation of water meters will augment revenue generation, no step has yet been taken to stop wastage of drinking water.

Nearly 20 million gallons of drinking water is being wasted every day. One of the reasons is some slum dwellers break the stand posts to get drinking water. Civic authorities had tried to install a device to stop waste through stand posts over a decade ago. But the venture had failed to yield results as the slum dwellers refused to allow the civic authorities install the device.
