Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) Plans To Set Up An Ayurvedic Clinic

The Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is coming up with an ayurvedic clinic in its premise within next three months with expertise from Kerala-based Vaidya Sala, a health care centre specialising in ayurvedic & herbal treatments.

"We are in the process of finalising an agreement with Vaidya Sala and our expectation is to seal the deal in a month,"said Rupak Barua, chief operating officer.

"We are providing the infrastructure, including 1000 square feet space, worth Rs 20 lakh, and Vaidya Sala will provide with two doctors here for the treatment," said Barua on the sidelines of a press meet to celebrate the World Health Day in association with the Kolkata Police.

"In accordance to this year's theme of protecting health from climate changes, we have selected Kolkata Police traffic constables to give free pulmonary function test since they are directly exposed to various climatic changes for long hours," Barua told reporters.

CMRI will provide the pulmonary function test of around 2000 constables within this month, said Barua. "Today, about 120 constables are undergoing this test," he said.

"Combustion of fossil fuel and emission of toxic chemicals from factories create heat waves, thereby fuelling global warming, which might lead to chronic obstructive lung disease, bronchitis, asthma or lung cancer," said Ranjan K Das, consultant chest specialist & fibreoptic bronchoscopist. So, as a protective measure, pulmonary function test has become necessary to check the invasion of such fatal diseases apart from the growing concern to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, he said.

As a part of the celebration, CMRI also introduced a special health card for all Kolkata Police personnel, where they will get 20% discount on all outdoor investigations like radiological and pathological tests.

"This special discount will also be extended to their family members and is valid till a year, " Barua said. "We will consider the proposal of increasing the discount amount."

To add to the list of celebration, a highly modernised state-of-the-art cardiology & lifestyle management clinic became operational from Monday in CMRI.

"The clinic will have non-invasive facilities like 2D echocardiography with doppler study, stress testing, 24-hour holter monitering, pulmonary function test and electrocardiogram," said Barua. Apart from these facilities, the clinic will also counsel patients who will turn up for general check-up about how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

"We have invested around Rs 50 lakh to open up this 2000 sq feet clinic.
