Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Has Decided To Do Away With Hoardings On The RoadBy siddharth22, Section Kolkata Municipal Corporation
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to do away with hoardings on the road and introduce gantries instead. A gantry a metal frame erected on the median or on both sides of the road to indicate road signs serves a dual purpose, said officials.
While a motorist can see those to know which way to turn at a particular crossing, advertisements can be displayed on these gantries without erecting hoardings that obstruct the vision of a driver. The civic top brass opted for gantries after the government asked KMC to dismantle all hoardings in front of heritage structures in general and BBD Bag in particular. Accordingly, KMC engineers drew three models of gantries and decided to instal those in different city zones. Civic engineers, after consulting the city traffic police, identified 32 places where gantries would be put up. Key roads and crossings selected include Chittaranjan Avenue-Victoria House, Esplanade East-Jawaharlal Nehru Road, JN Road-Lindsay Street, Park Street (in front of The Park), Mullickbazar-AJC Bose Road crossing, Shakespeare Sarani-AJC Bose Road crossing, AJC Bose-Jawaharlal Nehru Road (Exide crossing) and Rashbehari Avenue-SP Mukherjee Road.
While one side of these gantries will carry road signs for motorists, the other side will be used to display ads. According to a KMC source, all ad agencies are vying for contracts for which a tender will be floated this month.
A section of senior traffic police officials felt that illuminated electronic gantries, displaying road signs, were the need of the hour. Kolkata traffic police additional commissioner Harirajan suggested such a measure but KMC town planner Dipankar Sinha turned down the proposal. "We will not allow moving ads on a gantry. It will not serve any purpose," Sinha said on Saturday. Source:The Times Of India,06-04-08
