As A boost to furthering technology education in the state, 14 new private engineering colleges are likely to start functioning from the next academic session. At present, there are 56 engineering colleges in the state.
The state government had allowed private engineering colleges to come up in the state in the late 1990s. While the number of government engineering colleges have remained static at seven, the number of private engineering colleges have increased manifold.
According to West Bengal University of Technology Registrar Rafiqul Islam, these 14 colleges have received no-objection certificates from WBUT and state government in March 2008.
“Officials from the All-India Council of Technical Education will visit the colleges and inspect the infrastructure. After that, they will give the final nod,” he added. About 70 per cent of the 14 colleges will be located in and around Kolkata and the remaining will come up in the districts, said the registrar.
