State Tourism Dept:Restoration Plan For Heritage Structures Convert Them Into Hotels and RestaurantsBy Shashank, Section Tourism
The state tourism department on Friday revealed its intent to help owners restore dilapidated stately heritage structures and convert them into hotels and restaurants.
"Architecturally, Kolkata is a treasure trove with stately Raj-era mansions all over
If owners of heritage mansions welcome the initiative, it will also be a valuable addition to the paucity of hotel rooms in non-star category. In Kolkata, there is an immediate requirement of 5,000 rooms in the budget category. "Heritage properties apart, we will encourage the `bed & breakfast' concept so that budget tourists have a reasonable option," tourism secretary Bijoy Chatterjee said.
The department's initiative is in sync with the new policy that intends to promote four types of tourism: naturebased, cultural, religious and contemporary. While nature and religious tourism are classical categories, cultural and contemporary are the latest additions. The new policy also gives a thrust to private investment in the sector through a public-private partnership route. On Saturday, the department will sign two memoranda of understanding with hospitality group Sinclairs Hotels and realty major Emaar-MGF for projects in the Sunderbans. Source: TNN 05-April-2008
