State All Set To Become Solar Power Hub, German Companies Assured Help To State Energy IndependentBy Shashank, Section Development
With a slew of foreign investors making a beeline for Bengal, the state is gearing up to become a solar power hub. A number of German companies have already assured help to the state in technology transfer to help it become energy independent through solar power.
On Saturday, the US-based Astonfield purchased 24 acres in Bankura to generate 5 MW solar power, involving an investment of Rs 120 crore. Similarly, Reliance is investing Rs 110 crore to set up a 5 MW solar plant in Purulia over 30 acres. West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency director S P Gon Choudhury said if the solar plants run for 10 hours a day, 100 tonnes of coal would be saved the emission of 120 tonnes carbon dioxide will be prevented. For running thermal power stations, 10 tonnes coal is needed every hour. During the recent visit of state commerce and industries minister Nirupam Sen to Germany, an agreement was signed between Centrotherm Photovoltaics AG of Blaubeurn, Germany, and Kolkata-based Environ Energy-Tech Service.
The company is going to invest around Rs 2,000 crore in Haldia and for that it is looking for a 500-600-acre plot and already some land has been acquired by the Haldia Development Authority. The US-based Persius is Environ's financial partner and the new plant is expected to start manufacturing solar wafers within two years.
A fortnight ago, a German team met officials of Webel Solar and WBREDA and expressed their willingness to transfer technology. SMA, another German company, is willing to manufacture investors here. Soon, Maple Solar Energy of Kolkata will tie up with Smart Power systems International of Stuttgart, Germany, to manufacture solar home system as this will reduce power bills extensively, said KK Bhaumik, chairman of Maple. He added that they are going to invest Rs 300 crore for producing solar panels. Azore, again from the US, will also set up a 5 MW solar power plant in Purulia for an investment of Rs 110 crore.
