BPOs Plan To Recruit Experienced Hands In Kolkata

BPO firms may soon concentrate on hiring experienced hands. Players in the BPO industry, which has a large youth employee base, are considering recruiting people, who have earlier worked in BPOs.

Currently, freshers, who have just passed their higher secondary exams, stand a chance of getting BPO jobs. But things may change soon.

In a bid to attract the creme de la creme of the talent pool, India's leading BPO recruitment agencies are giving preference to those who have experience in this sector.

2coms Opportunity manager Priti Sharda said, "As the industry matures, the skill set requirements will change. At present, even an HS pass-out stands a chance of getting a job in a BPO. But now there is a demand for skilled candidates. We prefer to hire more graduates now," she added. Quattro BPO Solutions chairman & CEO Raman Roy said there would be a requirement for people from outside the industry in specialised areas.

HCL talent manager group global head Ravi Shankar said: "The cost of resources has gone up in the last two years. Gradually, a larger talent pool will be available." But does that mean the industry will face a huge talent shortage in the long run.

"Attrition is there in all sectors. But that does not affect the industry. In the short run, it will be profitable to recruit more people from outside the industry, but in the long run, it will damage the industry," he added.

If things go according to plan, more BE, Btech and MBAs will make their way into the industry. Though the employee profiles have changed over the years, the salary levels are expected to remain more or less the same with a general hike of 20-25% till 2010. However, there would still be a place for HS pass-outs in the industry.

Mafoi assistant consultant CRD Ritesh Agarwal said: "Companies can attract and poach employees. They are using retaining policies to curb attrition and have a grasp on the talent pool." All companies will not be able to get people from within the industry, he said.

Industry experts say that companies have become conscious about increasing salaries. There would be a general increase in salary as the industry is focussing on stabilizing salaries. During 2004-2005, an employee, who drew a CTC of Rs 2.75 lakh is expected to draw around Rs 3 lakh in 2008.
