West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Will Be Held On 24 May

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination will be held on 24 May. The timing and schedule of the examination remains unchanged. The examination, earlier scheduled for 20 April, had to be postponed following the leak of the previous set of question paper.

The Joint Entrance Examination Board had earlier decided that it was inconvenient to conduct the examination before the panchayat elections. With the other competitive examinations being held on every Sunday starting from second week of May to the first week of June, the Board has decided to conduct the examination on a Saturday.

Till 2005, WBJEE was a two-day examination, held on a Saturday and Sunday. After switching over to the multiple choice question pattern, the examination has been only on Sundays for the last two years.

The results of WBJEE will, however, be declared within 15 June, as per the Supreme Court directives. Although it was earlier considered that the Board officials might appeal to the Supreme Court for an exemption this year, it was later decided that such a move was unnecessary.
The Board chairman, Prof. Siddhartha Datta, said, "The date for conducting the examination was decided keeping in mind the fact that results have to be declared within the stipulated date. This means the Board has only three weeks to evaluate the answer scripts. The evaluation process would take more time this year compared to previous year as examiners would have to check long answers that include 20 per cent of the question paper.

Teachers felt declaring results within the stipulated date would not be much difficult. The number of candidates have decreased by over 36,000 this year. Time taken for evaluation of the papers could be reduced by introducing a centralised system of evaluation and including more examiners, a teacher said.

A Board member said, "We haven't discussed the measures that are to be taken for quickening the evaluation process. The Board will discuss these details when it meets next."
