City Prepares For Bandh, 5,000 Policemen Will Be On The Streets In The City To Prevent Any IncidentBy siddharth22, Section News
The Trinamul Congress and Suci sponsored 12-hour Bangla bandh would once again throw public life out of gears in the city as well as in the state with private buses, mini buses and taxis set to remain off the road apprehending agitations.
Although trains, airline and Metro services are expected to run normally, railway authorities are apprehensive about possible obstruction from bandh supporters. Senior state and city police officers have said that attempts to disrupt normalcy during tomorrow's bandh will be thwarted and stern action would be taken against those who would force people to obey the bandh call. Deputy commissioner (headquarters), Mr Vinit Goyal said, more than 5,000 policemen will be on the streets in the city tomorrow to prevent any untoward incident. Additional force will be deployed in all vital government offices including Writers' Buildings, New Secretariat building, Calcutta High Court. Vehicles of Radio Flying Squad and High Radio Flying Squad will be kept ready to enable policemen to travel within a short span of time in case of emergency. City traffic police officers will be present in all important road intersections to thw-art block roads, said Mr Goyal. State police officers said all superintendents of railway police and district police superintendents have been asked to keep a close watch on their respective areas to prevent any sort of disturbance. Apprehending clash in some places in South 24-Parganas where Suci has a strong foothold, an alert has been sounded, said an officer. Policemen will be present in all railway stations to prevent attempt to disrupt train services. Mr Sadhan Das, president of joint council of bus syndicate said: "Considering the present situation, it would not be appropriate to ask the bus owners to run their vehicles on a bandh day which can take a violent turn at any moment.
Therefore, we did not feel the necessity to impose any directions on them. But operations will resume in the evening after the bandh period gets over."
Mr Swarnakamal Saha of Bengal Bus Syndicate said, "I don't see any possibilities for running the vehicles during the 12-hour stretch in the morning when we know there would hardly be any passengers on the streets. Buses will operate in the evening but in fewer numbers after observing the public presence on the road. " Mr Aboshesh Daw of Mini Bus Operators' Coordination Committee added, "We can't afford to risk our property as if the vehicles are damaged by ba-ndh supporters, its a huge loss for us. So, we usually ask the bus owners to avoid bandhs as they will never get any accidental benefits from the insurance companies." Although Mr Bimal Guha, secretary of Bengal Taxi Association said that they will operate their vehicles tomorrow if the drivers are not harassed or the vehicles are not damaged on the roads. Concerned about the safety of the passengers, both Mr Arun Malakar, PRO of South Eastern Railway and Mr Samir Goswami, PRO of Eastern Railway ruled out any possibility of trains being cancelled or postponed tomorrow.
Security will be beefed up so that the passengers have a hassle-free journey. No cancellations or rescheduling is expected to affect flight operations. Airports Authority of India officials made contingency arrangements as they did on previous bandh days. Source:The Statesman,21-04-08
