Kolkatans will have to bear the sweltering heat for another 24 hours according to the predictions of the Regional Met Office. On Sunday the mercury nearly touched 40 degree Celsius.
According to the Met Office, the mercury touched an all time high as recorded in April for the past nine years. There is no possibility of a dip in the level of mercury in another 24 hours. Moreover for last few days there has been no rainfall or thundershowers and this has resulted in the rise in the mercury level.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature rose to 39.6 degree Celsius, while the maximum temperature on Saturday was 38.1 degree Celsius, a sharp rise by 1.5 degree Celsius within a day.
Mr GC Debnath, Dir-ector of Regional Meteorological Center, Alipore said, "The temperature has soared tremendously for the last few days. But there is a possibility of a dip in the mercury level in the next few days."
With the rise in the level of mercury coupled with frequent power cuts city dwellers have to face a harrowing time. How-ever the enthusiasm in the Eden gardens was magnificent as the supporters cheer their favourite teams in the recent IPL match that was scheduled on Sunday evening.
Also the hot dry wind coming from Central India and blowing through the Gangetic plains have resulted in the humid temperature. "If there is a thundershower coupled with drizzle then there is a chance of a dip in the mercury level," added Mr Debnath.
