Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) May Net Rs 26 Lakh From Indian Premier League (IPL) MatchesBy siddharth22, Section Kolkata Municipal Corporation
The city civic body seems to be upbeat about the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches to be played at the Eden Gardens. For if things go as planned, then the multi-crore event is all set to leave cash registers at the civic body ringing. An amount of at least Rs 26 lakh is expected to be received by way of amusement taxes from the event organisers.
Officials at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said the civic body had initially charged the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) around Rs 42 lakh as amusement tax for the seven IPL matches that will be played at Eden Gardens. Moreover, advertisement tax has also been charged for the hoardings and billboards set up by Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt Ltd, owner of Kolkata Knight Riders team. Civic officials said a meeting was arranged with city mayor Mr Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya following a letter requesting the civic authorities to relax the taxes. It was at the organisers' request that there was a reduction in the am-usement tax rates. When asked, the mayor said: "I personally felt that there are some grey areas in the notice as a result of which we decided on reducing the amount of tax charged. At present, IPL organisers have agreed to pay us around Rs 26 lakh. There will be no reduction regarding the advertisement tax rates."
According to the present rates, the city civic body charges amusement tax at Rs 10 per seat per four hours, while advertisement tax is charged based on the size of the hoardings, billboards and area covered for promoting the event.
It may be recalled that the city police too had demanded an amount of Rs 2 crore from the organisers for providing police protection during the matches and an amount of Rs 75 lakh has already been made as part payment to the police. Mr IS Bhandari, spokes-person Red Chillies Entertainment Private Ltd said: "All tax-related issues have been sorted out and the games will be carried out as per schedule."
