IPL Opener: It's Night Of The Kolkata Knight Riders, Brendon McCullum blasted 158 of just 73 ballsBy Sumit Kumar, Section Sports & Fun
The Indian Premier League couldn't have dreamt of a better start. The "new era" in cricket dawned -- never mind the night lights -- with just the kind of adrenaline pumping cricketing action that the organizers hoped would set the tone for the richest tournament in the game's history.
Even if the first match of the league -- Bangalore Royal Challengers versus Kolkata Knight Riders -- fizzled into a no-contest in the second innings, the rousing pyrotechnics from Kolkata opener Brendon McCullum grabbed enough eyeballs among television viewers across the country to prove that IPL, in the end, was about cricket and it is on-field action that's going to make or break it. This was a day Bangaloreans weren't going to miss. Though, in the end, they watched in dread as the home team collapsed under the weight of McCullum's awesome, unbeaten innings of 158. Bangalore lost by 140 runs, falling for 82 in reply to the daunting 222 put up by the Kolkatans. ![]()
Kiwi Stumper Blasts A Record Unbeaten 158 Off 73 Balls As Team Kolkata Dwarfs Bangalore
Whether the tournament opener was history in the making or not, the Kiwi opener seemed bent on disproving the scientific fact that Kiwis cannot fly as he sent the ball soaring to all parts of the ground and well over it. Kolkata Knight Rider's own set of cheerleaders on the As many as 10 fours and 13 sixes -- the most maximum hits in a T20 game -- rained off his bat as he raced to the highest score in a T20 first-class fixture. His unbeaten 158 (whew! that's some score) came off a mere 73 balls and took the Knight Riders to an imposing 222 for 3 in their 20-over innings. Click on "Full Story" for more...
Spare a thought here for Bangalore Royal Challengers skipper Rahul Dravid, who had invited Sourav Ganguly's men to bat. He was hoping for dew but it was only tears that fell, as there was no recovering from that sort of an onslaught. For those who had fooled themselves into believing that a side full of `Test'ed batsmen could not be bowled out, a rethink was certainly in order. Dismissing the Royal Challengers for a paltry 82, the Knight Riders registered the first victory of the IPL, the final margin of 140 runs showing their total dominance on the night.
On a day of many firsts, the first boundary was a typical T20 slog over mid-wicket from Mc-Cullum and two balls later the first six came off the leading edge that flew over third-man. If the thought then was "so that's the way this game is going to be played", you wouldn't have been wrong. The edges continued to flow but soon power-hitting took over. If at Rs 4 lakh a day (over the 44-day tournament), Zaheer Khan was an expensive option, what of the 18 runs off his first over. Or, for that matter, Ashley Noffke's 23 and his Australian compatriot Cameron White's 24, there's no sparing the expense it seems. Contrast that with Ishant Sharma, who's salary is more than twice that of Zaheer. His first ball in the IPL accounted for Dravid, rated as one of the finest against fast bowling. With Ishant's lesser known colleague, Bengal's Ashok Dinda chipping in with the wicket of the India Under-19 skipper Virat Kohli, the very next over, the hosts' game was well and truly up. Wicket after wicket fell cheaply as Ajit Agarkar bagged three wickets. Source: TNN
