Traffic Control Should Be Overhauled In KolkataBy siddharth22, Section Roads in Kolkata
The traffic control system in Bengal is in a disarray. If it is not properly controlled in Kolkata, it is almost absent in the rest of Bengal.
The major stumbling block is the growth and burgeoning of the unplanned city. Another impediment is the surfeit of vehicular traffic. The traffic bottlenecks during peak hours make confusions worse confounded and whenever there is a traffic snarl, the drivers who are elevated avatars or incarnations of "khalasis" do whatever they like flouting traffic rules. As a result the problem becomes more complicated and the auto-rickshaw drivers wend their way in lanes or narrow by-lanes or take the short-cut compounding the snarl and the traffic constable looks helpless. In most cases he looks like a green horn having no training in the matter. During processions and rallies, traffic control becomes the major casualty and even introduction of the electronic control system has failed to yield the desired results, rather the problem has aggravated showing no sign of abatement.
When drivers drive their vehicles at a breakneck speed or vie with each other to pick more passengers caring a fig for the lives of the passengers the traffic constables look helpless. Most of them have itching palms and no care for controlling traffic. If the problem is bad in Kolkata, it is worse in the districts. There is dearth of traffic constables there to worsens the situation. The pedestrians usually do not abide by traffic rules. Unless stringent measures are resorted to more accidents would occur. If the errant drivers are allowed to escape with impunity after coughing up a few thousand rupees, they will not stop. The traffic control needs overhauling and the men need training and pavements need be cleared.
