VIP Township Salt Lake Is Set To Acquire New Look With Swanky New Bus Sheds, A Modern Traffic System

VIP township Salt Lake is all set to acquire a new look with swanky new bus sheds and a modern traffic system.

Karukrit, the advertising agency appointed by Bidhannagar Municipality, is setting up new passenger shelters across the township. The agency will be setting up 125 new passenger shelters and about 900 illuminated kiosks across the township this year.

The agency has already replaced the old passenger sheds with the new steel structure in several areas beside City Centre, at Broadway, near Karunamoyee and PNB Island. Plus, these sheds would be lit up after dark.

Commencement of work on the project started more than six months after the civic body signed a contract with the agency. It took some time for the municipality to pull down the ill-maintained passenger sheds that are more than 10-15 years old.

Karukrit will pay Rs 1.25 crore annually to the civic body and also instal advertising billboards on these new bus shelters and kiosks to earn revenue from its clients. "Of the total revenue that they would earn over the five-year period, the agency would pay us about Rs 6.25 crore," said a civic official.

The civic body was looking for a private firm for some time to improve and develop the existing bus shelters and street lights, most of which are in a pathetic condition. With more vehicles headed for Sector V and more and more offices coming up in Salt Lake, the civic body felt the urgent need to have modern passenger shelters to keep up with the times. Illuminated kiosks, that will dot the township soon, would help to ease night driving in Salt Lake. Civic officials said this will also improve civic infrastructure with better bus shelters and illuminated kiosks.

Apart from the sheds, zebra crossings can be seen near City Centre and EZCC on Broadway Road. Also, new electronic traffic signalling systems have been installed on City Centre Island, PNB Island, Tank 14 Island and Karunamoyee Island.
